His boots are made from the scaly skin of some pale reptile. This is what David A. Clarke Jr., sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, wears when he’s not in uniform, or at least when he goes to the Conservative Political Action Conference, where I caught up with him this spring. At that right-wing Woodstock, he was treated like a rock star, stopped at every turn for selfies and handshakes.”
